4 Checks To Preform On Your Garage Door To Get It Ready For Winter

Gertrude Collins

This fall, make sure that you spend some time getting your home ready for the change in seasons. Before winter comes, tighten up the hardware on your garage door, check the cables, lubricate all moving parts and inspect the weather stripping.

#1 Secure The Hardware

The main job of your garage door is to open and close. All of that movement can loosen up the hardware that supports your garage door throughout the year. Although movement and vibration is natural for your garage door, it can still cause the bolts that support your garage door to loosen over time.

Use a socket wrench to tighten up all the bolts on your garage door. Be sure to tighten up the roller brackets as well. You should be able to find all of the hardware on the sides of your garage door as well as running across the middle of your garage door on the components where it folds in half.

#2 Check Out The Cables

The cables on your garage door contain a high degree of tension and require the skills of a professional to fix them. However, you don't need any special skills to check out your cables. Check your cables and see if there is any damage to the bottom roller bracket, which is one of the most common areas where garage door cables fail. Then, check the entire cable for broken strands. If you see signs of wear on your cables, call a professional to come with them. Your cables have a lot of tension and force contained with them, which is why you should use a professional to repair them.

#3 Keep Everything Lubricated

You want to keep your garage door well lubricated. Lubricating your garage door will help ensure that your garage door continues to operate as smoothly as possible. Just take some spray lubricant and spray it on all the moving parts of your garage door, such as the overhead springs, the rollers, and the joints that bend on each panel of your garage door. Doing this at least once a year will help your garage door operate smoothly and quietly.

#4 Check Out The Weather Stripping

Finally, check the weather stripping on your garage door. It should go around the edge of your garage door and is designed to help keep the outside air from getting into your garage space. Over time, weather stripping can start to crack and degrade. If your weather stripping is degrading, be sure to replace it before winter hits.

This fall, secure the hardware, lubricate the moving parts, check out the cables and inspect the weather stripping in order to prepare your garage door for winter. For more information, contact companies like AAA Garage Door, Inc.
