Adding A Doggie Door To Your Garage Door

If you have a garage floor that is smooth and cool, your dog might enjoy spending time in the garage. You may even want to install a pet door that your dog can climb through when the garage door is closed so he or she can explore outside. When a pet door is installed on another part of your home, this might make your home less energy-efficient. After all, heat and cold can pass through the door. Also, a pet door may even be an entryway for a burglar. However, a pet door might be more suitable for a garage door.

Avoiding Damage to Your Home

Pet doors can also be great when you let your dog in and out of your home. It places less wear and tear on the garage door, since you don't have to raise and lower it as often. Instead, your dog simply relies on the dog door, which is easy to repair. 

If you will be keeping your dog in the garage, it's important to not keep him there if it will be too hot or cold. Ideally, you should keep your dog in an insulated garage. If your garage is insulated, that can be a good way to prevent your dog from vandalizing other parts of your home. Also, you may simply want to feed your dog in the garage because it may be easier to clean up any dog food that spills all over.

Keeping Your Home Clean

Another advantage of having your dog enter and exit your home through the garage is that he or she might love to roll in the mud or my simply track mud into your home. You can have a towel ready to clean your dog before entering the home. 

Installing the Doggie Door

If you do install a dog door, you will want to make sure that it's big enough that your dog can fit through, but not so big that a bigger animal might fit through. For example, some homeowners might discover that raccoons attempt to enter the home through the garage door. However, the last thing you want is for the door to be too small and for you to need to cut the door some more so your dog can fit. Also, you want to consider if you're planning on getting a bigger dog in the future. If you're concerned about whether you can perform the job yourself, a garage door service may be willing to install one for you.
