4 Things To Know About Buying A New Entryway Door

Gertrude Collins

If the entry door to your home looks worn out or beat up, it's time to get a new door. The entry to your home makes an impression on visitors and it affects the curb appeal of your home. You may want the highest-quality door you can afford so it will be attractive yet durable. Here are four important things to know about entryway doors.

1. You May Want A Prehung Door

Whether you install your new door yourself or hire someone to do it, a prehung door is a good option. This door comes already attached to a frame, so you install the frame and door as one piece. This is handy when your old door frame is in bad shape. You can simply remove the old door frame before you install the new prehung door.

The alternative is a slab door. If your old door is still fairly new and the frame is in good shape, then you may want a slab door instead. This is just a door without any frame or other attachments.

2. The Door Hardware Is Bought Separately

When you look at new doors at the home improvement store, you'll notice none of them have locks or handles. You can choose those yourself separately so you get a style you like. This also lets you choose the locking system that gives you the amount of home security you want.

3. Wood Is A Popular Look In Entryway Doors

You can choose from a wood, metal, or fiberglass entryway door. Wood is the classic look, but solid wood doors can be expensive. You can find wood doors that are not solid wood, metal, and fiberglass doors that look like real wood if you want the look but need to save money.

Sometimes, security is the most important factor in choosing your new door. When that's the case, you might want a steel door instead of wood. These come in different colors and can even mimic the look of wood. They're not as expensive as solid wood, and they're durable and strong so they resist intruders.

4. You Can Add Glass For Improved Home Lighting

Rather than buy a solid door, consider buying one that has glass in it. Glass makes an entryway door more attractive, and it also allows more light in your home so your home isn't so dark and dreary. You can buy plain glass or decorative glass in different shapes and sizes. Large windows might be made from impact glass so you don't have to worry about intruders knocking the glass out to gain entry to your home.
